Teaching the Sacraments

Teaching our students in grades 3–5 about the seven sacraments is a meaningful opportunity to help them grow in both knowledge and faith. At this age, children are beginning to think more deeply, ask questions, and make connections. Introducing the sacraments in a way that is engaging and rooted in Scripture allows them to see that our faith is not just something we learn about—it is something we live.

One way we do this is by using an engaging worksheet to help students open their Bibles and find areas that are important to the Catholic faith and how we consider it a sacrament.

The seven sacraments can sometimes feel like a lot for intermediate students to remember, but when they are tied directly to Scripture, they become more understandable and meaningful. Instead of viewing them as separate concepts, students begin to recognize that each sacrament comes from the life and teachings of Jesus. This helps shift their learning from memorization to true understanding.

For example, when students learn about Baptism, connecting it to the story of Jesus’ baptism helps them see its importance and purpose. Teaching the Eucharist alongside the Last Supper allows them to understand that Mass is rooted in a real moment in Jesus’ life. Students are able to use task cards with Bible verses and pair them with the correct sacrament. The conversations of the students have been incredible! These connections help students realize that the sacraments are not just traditions—they are gifts given to us by Christ.

This image shows an example of a quiz to go along with each sacrament.

Tying the sacraments to Scripture also helps students see that God is active and present. They begin to understand that the same Jesus they hear about in the Bible is still working in their lives today through each sacrament. This builds a stronger, more personal connection to their faith and encourages them to see God in their everyday experiences.

We hope you enjoy these as much as we do!
